“Okay, tell me what you got,” I call out before the doors have even finished opening.

“Just about nothing,” Rick calls back.

Astra takes her seat at her workstation and I take up my usual position at the front of the room and start pacing. That wasn’t the news I wanted to hear, though I was expecting it. Nothing about this case is going our way and everything is a problem. The news that she has a boyfriend, though, has rekindled my hope that she’s alive. I know it’s a slimmer chance than winning the lottery, getting struck by lightning, and finding a flying pig all on the same day, but part of me still hopes she just decided to skip town with him.

“So, I did as deep a dive on Patrick Foles as I could in the time I had,” Rick starts. “But this guy reads like a Boy Scout.”

“How so?” I ask.

Rick taps at his keyboard and the screens behind me come alive with his photograph from the firm. He’s a very handsome man with flecks of gray peppering his dark hair. His neatly trimmed beard and mustache hold the same salt and pepper, his piercing green eyes convey strength and wisdom, and on top of it all he’s got a strong jawline, and a patrician nose. He looks like he’s straight out of central casting for a handsome older gentleman of noble lineage. If you were looking for somebody to play, say, a king or the President of the United States, Patrick Foles would be your guy.

“I think I feel my daddy issues coming back,” Astra comments with a laugh.

“Figured you might,” I reply. “Good thing you have Benjamin waiting for you at home.”

“For now,” she tips me a wink.

“Ladies, if you’re done being degenerates and objectifying Mr. Foles?” Rick asks.

“Please, go on,” I reply with a laugh.

“All right, well, Foles is fifty-four. Been married for twenty-seven years to his wife Beth. They have one child—sixteen-year-old Amelia. She attends a boarding school in France,” he says. “Has a light social media presence, but what there is shows a man very much in love with his wife. Seems to be the picture of a family man.”

“Lots of guys come across being very much in love with their wives,” Astra points out. “Those same guys usually end up taking their eighteen-year-old mistresses to the Churchill.”

“That’s true in many cases,” Rick acknowledges. “But I don’t get that vibe from Foles.”

“No?” I ask. “Convince me. Build your case.”

“All right, well, the Foles are heavily involved with their church. Patrick is a deacon,” he starts.

“Dennis Rader, also known as the BTK killer, was his church council president,” Astra counters.

“Okay, well, the Foles also sit on the board of several charitable foundations,” Rick continues undaunted.

I laugh softly. “John Wayne Gacy did a lot of charity work.”

Astra laughs and gives me a high five. “She’s got a point, Rick.”

“Well, here’s something you can’t refute,” he says.

A picture of Patrick and Beth Foles pops up on the screens behind me.
